FAQs for Harnesses
What to check before you buy: fit, gear loops, buckles and when to retire it.
How should a climbing harness fit?
A climbing harness should feel snug/secure but comfortable so that you aren't suffocating yourself while wearing it!
A couple of rules of thumbs are that the waistbelt should be sitting above the hips and it must not be able to be pulled back down unless you undo it. Typically a few fingers between the harness and body is good.
Can I use the same harness for indoors and outdoors?
Of course! As long the harness isn't designed for a specific purpose like full-body harnesses or arborist harnesses.
Most sport harnesses are perfect middle ground for indoors and outdoors.
What harness should I pick?
Mostly it comes down to personal preference and on how/where you climb.
- Gym climbers usually prefer lightweight, simple designs
- Sport climbers benefit from comfortable padding and multiple gear loops
- Trad climbers need extra gear loops and all-day support to carry all of their cams, nuts and hexes!
- Alpine climbers often choose lightweight, packable models
What is the best climbing harness for beginners?
The best beginner harness is one that prioritises comfort, simplicity, and adjustability.
You don't need the best and most expensive harness to start off with, choose something with a lot of padding, adjustable leg loops and with some gear loops.
Check out our Ocun Twist Quattro for an all rounder or Ocun Twist for basic gym use.
How long does a climbing harness last?
The lifespan depends on usage, storage and manufacturer specifications; some manufacturers have a 5 year usage period while others are 7 years.
Most harnesses with moderate usage will last several years with proper care but for people using harnesses on the daily like arborist or rope access technicans, it may only last a year or two.
It's important to inspect your harness and see if there is any obvious signs of damage
What size do I pick?
- Measure your natural waist (above your hips, not where low-rise pants sit)
- All of our harnesses have sizing guides for you to compare your measurements
- If you are both sizes, chose the one which will give you the most wiggle room both directions.
- Keep in mind layering with shirts, jackets etc
